Hi All,

Mercury is easily the closest planet to us as the moment, but seeing it, at magnitude 2.1 in full daylight, is a challenge.

Conditions were poor yesterday, but Venus was conveniently close by, to synchronise and focus on.

'Pipp' and 'AS!3' were able, amazingly, to assemble the faint blobs captured within the frames into an image, although some manual settings in 'Pipp' were needed to define the target.

There are some vague bright patches which may represent actual features.

Hi,
Well known among the moon observers.

One of the biggest mare of the moon is mare Imbrium. Unfortunately, I have not been able to observe the whole mare. Anyway, a large part can be seen here.

On this observation you can see 3 craters diagonally.

From top to bottom Cassini crater (flooded with lava) with 2 craters in the crater bottom. In the middle, Aristillus crater with several mountain peaks in the middle. Below left crater Archimedes with small crater wells. To the left of Aristillus crater see a number of Montes Spitzbergen mountains and to the left of Cassini crater see Mons Piton. The mountain range on the right is Montes Caucasus

On 12 February I could only do one observation and that is the area around Mare Crisium.

I have made these kind of observations before and it still amazes me how the moon can be beautiful when the sun is high.

Much has been said about it, one of the most beautiful craters of the moon: Clavius

Another look at craters bottom. This observation is made far from the terminator.

During the moon's observation, contrasts are increased during recording.

This to give the dark and light lava part more contrast.

Hi All,

A shot from last night, after our long spell of rain and high winds.

Some interesting clouds in high northern latitudes (North is down in this image).

I also took some shots of Mars using my new 'B&Q' apodising screen.

The conditions were changing rapidly so a true comparison was not really possible....but results were at least comparable, from what I could see.

What it doesn't seem to do (at least on first showing) is to improve the 'edge rind' effect so common with the smaller planets....unfortunately!

Whether or not the moderate loss of light/high shutter speed is made up for by increased contrast remains to be seen.

May be good for helping separate close double stars, we'll see.

All the best

Dear Masami,

It was indeed very sad to learn of passing of my friend, Masatsugu Minami.  I have corresponded with him since 1986 and had to opportunity to meet with him, and you as well, in 2002 while my wife and I visited our son in Japan.  Masatsugu will surely be missed by many Mars observers all over the Earth.

Since noticing that the last issue of the CMO was #469 on 25 May 2018, I must ask if the CMO will continue to be published?  Hopefully someone will take over and continue to publish your fine newsletter.

Again, Minami-San will be missed by many people,

Hi all,

Here is an image from March 8th. Average seeing conditions. The GRS is nicely seen heading off the disk at right. The SEB presents a rather confusing picture with white clouds covering the northern half of the belt while the dynamic activity following the GRS remains.
