Here is my Mars observation from 1st August 2018.

I include color (LRGB + RGB) as well monochrome composites in this mail.

No individual images are shown, which I used to made up the composites (made from 30sec clips typically when used IR and RGB filters, but UV filtered ones are typically 60sec or more clip length).

Tell me, if you need them also !

Seeing was less than ideal on this night, but good enough to produce useful results.

For all data I used the 20"Cassegrain of IAS observatory located in Namibia.

Here is my Mars observation from 29th July 2018.

I parted the pictures on three panels, as it is my most extensive data set yet of the 2018 Mars apparition.

On the first panel are all color and monochrome composites shown. They have the highest resolution and contrast.

On the other two panels are the individual 30 second videos resulted from the stacking process shown.

Please, do not hesitate to arrange the picture sets in your desired form, as you have done nicely in the past.

¤·····Subject: Mars 2018 apparition overview

Hi all,

One of my objectives for 2018 was to obtain enough high quality Mars data to produce a complete image showing an overview of the majority of the apparition.

After around one hundred imaging sessions shooting the red planet during 2018 (remotely from home and in person from Barbados and Chile) ive finally had time to compile the image.

Obviously an enormous amount of work has gone in to being able to produce this both in taking the data from month to month and countless hours of processing.

Many interesting things can be seen across the presentation though most notably:

1. The changing angular diameter.

2. Global dust storm wiping out the planet during June-July and its aftermath as the atmosphere slowly clears.

3. The SPC emerging from its winter hood and shrinking away to a tiny summer remnant.

4. The tilt of the planet slowly increases southward giving a better view of the small SPC.

Also many typical localised weather events can be seen from Orographic clouds across Elysium/Tharsis to dust filling the Valles Marineris in early August.

My sincere thanks to the guys at Chilescope without which such resolution could not have been achieved.

Dear Martin,

These are excellent results for a 6”4 Martian disc.

This remembers me of an imaging result I made in 2010 with my 25 cm f/15 Schmidt Cassegrain telescope (with Opticon optics) of an 8” Mars disc that plainly showed the Martian canali.

This image is herewith included.

It is never too late to image Mars, even if opposition date has long been passed.

Hi,

A brief gap in the murk and a lull in the jetstream gave me a nice surprise opportunity to image Mars last night at 6.4”. Again IR limited by scope resolution and worse than RGB.

Also a size comparison to see the size Mars is now compared to middle of last year.

S.polar cap now about 0.33” across which is close to Dawes limit of 0.26” for my dob.

On that night was a central lunar eclipse - the combined light from the Moon in mid totality was less than Mars.

I include a fisheye view of that special event..Moon is left of Mars and much more red colored.

Hi,

Some good seeing in the clear spell before it clouded up last night ahead of the lunar eclipse.

Able to pick out some nice details on Mars at 6.6" across. IR images at 642nm and 742nm actually show less than the colour image and are badly affected by edge-rind effect so not included.

Hi all,

I think this is my first Mars submission for 2019, so wishing you all a happy, healthy and prosperous new year.

My Mars imaging has been scarce recently due to ongoing cloudy/thunderstorm evening conditions.

It did however clear yesterday evening allowing this image set.

The region of the current dust storm (Chryse/Aurorae Sinus/V Marineris) will likely only come into view for me sometime next week, unless it expands westwards.

Mars is now at 7” and Ls 322.

¤·····Subject: Neptune full spectrum+ Uranus comparison 2019/01/03

Hi everyone,

May you all have a nice 2019 astronomical year!

This week I took a last opportunity to take a full Neptune spectrum, with infrared part. To use filters of order in a easier way, I had to buy a Star analyser 200, the backfocus of my telescope beeing not long enough to use the SA100 with my filter slider :(.
This time I used a RG630 filter to get the infrared part. Unfortunately it is significantly noiser.

As for Uranus, I made two processings, one for the reflectance of Neptune, the other for the colour response.

This allows me to compare the colour response of both Uranus and Neptune. Neptune does not look to be really brighter in blue than Uranus, but Uranus looks slightly brighter in green and red, hence the difference in the perceived tint at the eyepiece.
