S Sabeaus/S Meridiani showing some, albeit slow, return towards normality, but the Margarifiter extension remains affected.

Hi all, here's an image of Mars from this morning in variable conditions. Once again a 750nm longpass IR filter was used. Hellas Basin is still very bright in the lower part of this image, and some hints of internal structure can be seen. To it's north we see Syrtis Major.

Mars at opposition. Things could have been so different, with the high expectations prior to the dust storm, but it has nonetheless been fascinating watching as things unfolded. Even the recent Hubble image seemed somewhat subdued. My respect to those fellow imagers that have conscientiously followed the amazing planetary trilogy over these last months. Even with my unplanned and enforced layoff for a month, I feel like I have run a few marathons. And there's still plenty to do in the coming months......

Hi all, here's an image of Mars from this morning through a 750nm longpass IR filter. Seeing was not very good, strong jetstream here for most of the session with brief periods of improved seeing. Mars is close to opposition now, in this image we can see a very bright Hellas Basin at lower centre with the dark pattern of Syrtis Major to its north.

Hi all,

I was pretty much set up for an all-nighter last night, having seen a recent general trend of improved seeing from about 21.00 local time through to midnight. Unfortunately conditions started as very poor at about 21.00 and I only got very slight improvement over the next few hours. I stayed at it until I was able to confirm the reduction of the small storm near Solis Lacus rather than an increase in intensity, and then called it a night. Although it could still be seen, it looked greatly reduced in intensity.

All in all, rather frustrating, but will try again tonight and hopefully enjoy the adjacent lunar eclipse.

At least I got a reasonable IR capture and the limb brightening  was again detected, although limited in B.

Some images from this morning. Strong jetstream is unfortunately limiting what can be done of late.

A bright new dust cloud is visible over Solis Lacus. A very dark albedo feature has appeared across Phasis-Daedalia which was not present before this storm (though has appeared before following large dust storms.)

The full image set from yesterday evening.

Other than the small outbreak in the Solis Lacus region, a few other things I note:

a) The limb brightening continues and appears to also have a G component.

b) M Acidalium is showing as very dark

c) The NPH(I hope that is accurate), in the last few days seems to have significantly reduced in brightness, and it appears that some structure may be detected as a dark area in the R image

I captured a fair bit of data last night, but with Nick Haigh reporting an outbreak in Daedalia, I did a very quick process of my last capture of the evening and it indeed shows the storm in the Solis Lacus/Daedalia region at upper right. This region has been very active throughout the duration of the main storm.

Hi all,

Mars 3 days before opposition. I had suspected some limb softening yesterday, but today there appears to be a significant limb brightening around the planet, most noticeable in the B image. I don’t recall anything similar in 2016- possibly due to the dust ?

S Meridiani starting to be a bit more obvious in visual wavelengths.

I will try and do a bit more work on it, but I did a quick comparison of the IR’s from yesterday and today, specifically looking at the bright regions just south of Meridiani and Margaritifer. My initial conclusion was that there was limited significant changes- possibly pointing to the bright regions being settled on the surface? Comments welcome.

Subtle light cloud can be seen extending off the NP region in the B image

On a  lighter note, it almost appears as if the northern section of Margaritifer has detached and moved north during the storm.

Hi all, here's an image of Saturn from July 23 using a red filter to enhance the visibility of any storms. Two things of interest are visible - the north polar storm can be seen at top, and also the bright equatorial zone spot just right of centre close to the rings.

Dears,

No miracle here, Jupiter was very low (between 18° and 13°) at acquisition. What surprised me is that  founs the 13° image is the best (probably because of the narrow infrared bandwidth for this methane absorption band image).
Oval BA is setting preceded by 3 white features, 3 white ovals visible in the SSTB, the wavy north edge of the
NEB is visible, and a curious shape of a feston in EZ.

Dear Masatsugu and Masami,

 

Attached are some images  of Mars taken on July 18th and 20th .  

 Although I understand the dust storms have now subsided, there still appears to be a lot of dust in Mar’s atmosphere. 

 Observing visually I had a really tough time making out any of the darker albedo features.  Even though Syrtis Major was in good position on these two mornings it only showed as some slight mottling through the eyepiece. 

 The bright poles and Hellas were visible but that was about the only things that were clearly showing through the eyepiece. 

  I was glad that on the morning of the 20th I had one my friends, who is a very experienced visual observer, join me and confirm my visual observations.

Hi all,

Mars image set from yesterday evening.

The SPC remains complex in IR and R. Argyre at upper centre and Valles Marineris stretches across the centre of the image.

Out of interest, almost the whole session last night was done by remote operation of the observatory from my study. It was all a bit more comfortable than normal!

Hellas Basin at lower right is extremely bright in IR, due to dust I guess.

Hi all, some excellent seeing last night despite elevation of 18 to 16° only. While the storms are clearly over now, the constrast in visible wavelengths remains weak, and visually, I did not see any difference from the past weeks. Only the new dark Daedalia/Araxas marking could be glimpsed.

 

I have added images taken with narrow B bandpass filters in order to try to detect auroras. None is seen here certainly but the filters prove very effective for subtle white clouds detection especially the 425.

Hi all, some good seeing on Mars at times this morning, once again only the IR filter shows much detail apart from the poles. Here's an image using a 750nm longpass IR filter combining data captured over a 20 minute period. Hellas basin is the bright dust-filled circular feature at lower right, with a distinct halo of dust outside as well. Syrtis Major is faintly visible to it's north.

The major Martian features are mostly all able to be imaged now but still have a "washed out" or hazy look to them from the remnants of the dust storm.

Hi all, here's an image of Mars from this morning through a 750nm longpass filter. Seeing was variable, this image was made by merging data captured over 15 minutes in WinJupos. Hellas Basin can be seen at lower right, very bright with a diffuse outer halo presumably of dust still very active in that area.

¤·····Subject: Mars spectro-photometry - July 16th 2018

Hi all,
After weeks of work, here are some first results using a Star Analyser 100 on Mars. The idea is not to identify chemical elements, as we do in spectroscopy usually, but to produce a color photometry work on planets using this low res spectrograph, in order to detect if possible color changes on planets.

 

This month was a superb occasion to test the idea on the martian global dust storm. As expected, the result show a very red spectrum, with almost no blue recorded. I hope to detect changes when the atmosphere will be completely clear in 2/3 months.

 

But right now, a notable difference can be recorded when focusing on the south polar cap. Although affected as well by the dust, the cap remains less red than the rest of the disk. Let's see how the spectrum will change when it clear as well from dust.

 

The data has been corrected both for instrument response and atmospheric extinction using nearby solar-like star Omega Sagittari (G5IV)

Images taken at Pic du Midi (acquisition by Emil Kraaikamp, I ama sure he will process later the data better than this) with a C14 (probably with a non optimal optical setup) at a mere 21° elevation.
Mars with its relief rather well visible now, Mare Cimmerum and Sirenum at meridian,  Olympus Mons and the three Tharsis volcanoes setting. South polar cap is still covered partially by dust. Here are the infrared and RGB images:

Here's an IR image of Mars from this morning in reasonable seeing.
Valles Marineris is the bright horizontal feature rising at left,
South polar region at bottom.

 

The visible features appear pretty much identical to yesterdays image in the same IR channel.

The seeing today was perhaps slightly worse.

Hello,

Attached is a set of images of Mars taken on 14 July.

 

The telescope is a 245mm apochromatic refractor and the camera is an
ASI224MC.

The filters are band pass filters with a FWHM of 40nm.  The 889nm filter is a methane bandpass filter 8nm wide.

The images were taken from Melbourne Australia.

I am using an 805nm filter now on Mars, a slightly longer wavelength than I was using before.

 

On the 15th,  the central meridian corresponds to a dark patch known as Laestrygonium Sinus. In the north are the light-coloured plains of Elysium and Amazonis. 

On the 19th, Mare Sirenum is the dark area in the middle south, but the area now doesn’t look like it does on maps at all. Olympus Mons in the N looks dark.

I agree that there are some active, dense, dust cores that are shown in your image.

 

Since the seasonal SPC should regress more rapidly than usual if the sublimation rate is increased, the way to find out whether the sublimation rate is increased is to observe the regression of the edge of the SPC. Although the warming of the atmosphere by the dust's absorption of sunlight gives us a reason to think the sublimation rate might be increased, it could also be asserted that the dust covering the cap decreased insolation so that the ground is colder and the sublimation rate should be decreased!

 

Note that the NPH is prominent. I interpret this to mean that it's at a higher altitude than the mixing layer -- i.e., stratospheric -- as the mixing layer is warmed by dust. Maybe I'm wrong about that.

Hi all,

Mars on 18 July, looking down on the Tharsis, Solis Lacus and Valles Marineris regions.

To me, it looks like we are seeing more detail starting to show in the RGB images.

The NP region is incredibly bright and difficult to process.

Quite a lot of structure can be seen on the SPC.

Hi all,

Trying to catch up on a bit of backlog.

Mars image set from 17th July, centred on Tharsis. It still looks to me that there are active dust regions.

I am not sure whether I am correct or not, but I have noticed that active dust storms seem to show, at least to some extent, in the G channel.

I note that the brilliant blue cloud extending off the SPC on the sunlit limb that has been with us for quite a while is now nearly gone. Does this indicate a reduction in the sublimation rate?

Hi all, some reasonable seeing for a short while this morning. Here's an image of Mars through a 750nm longpass filter showing increasing amounts of surface detail as compared to recent weeks so we might hope that the dust is slowly settling.

Well with Sytris Major and Hellas on the CM I was expecting to
 see some detail but visually the planet looked like the dust
had not settled out much at all.. Hellas was a little bit brighter and

Hi all,

We had not intended to observe this night but soon after sunset i noticed the DIMM at the nearby Gemini South Observatory (20km to the NNE) was reading 0.38" seeing - the lowest value i had seen it all year! We quickly opened and took some data, and i am very glad we did as it resulted in our best Saturn imagery this apparition.

 

The polar storm was not visible but a few other features are visible on the disk, including the EZ bright spot. The Encke division can be seen around the entire ring system.

You really do need very steady seeing conditions for these big apertures to really start performing!

This was a frustrating session as every time the seeing turned towards excellent strong gust of winds and passing clouds would roll in.
Had to use higher gain setting than I like to usually use.
This side of Mars still looks very dust ridden overall.

Hi all, some slightly better seeing this morning on Mars with the IR750 longpass filter showing more detail than before. Maybe some of the obscuration is clearing away?

 

Valles Marineris is prominent at centre with the South Pole at bottom showing some isolated brighter regions. The three Tharsis volcanoes are faintly visible rising at left.

We usually think of these global dust storms as being started by the cold winds rushing northward from the SPC, as the exposure of the southern latitudes to sunlight warms the ground in southern spring. The updrafts created by the warmth of the ground enhances the outrush of the SPC winds. Even though this one began in the Northern Hemisphere, it is possible that the winds from the SPC in the usual spring fashion were what magnified the storm so greatly.

 

I think that it is now a global dust storm, and I think that the usual classification of these events dictates that the only previous global storm on record was that of 1971. I agree with you, Jim, that the poles may be the last areas to be covered in a global storm, although the 1971 development was not well observed, so we don't have anything to compare to the development of the present one. However, I think that, in most planet-encircling storms, the poles were the main areas not covered.

 

The dust in the atmosphere warms it, as you are pointing out. This effect is greatest in the upper levels of the mixing layer (i.e., troposphere), because the high altitude dust attentuates the insolation to levels below it. As you know, the normal situation in the troposphere is a decrease in temperature with increased altitude. The dust storm reverses that gradient -- a situation called a temperature inversion. Winds are suppressed by the temperature inversion, as the air is very stable. This results in disappearance of dense dust cores, and the dusty haze gradually settles to the ground.

 

I think that Clyde's July 15th image shows separate dense dust cores over Thaumasia Felix, Aonius Sinus, Sirenum, Phaethontis, and Electris. These dust clouds include powerful updrafts that supply the upper levels of the mixing layer with more dust. Though it has been suggested that some areas are now clearing a bit, it's not clear to me (pun intended.) When the last of the dense cores have disappeared, then I'll expect gradual, global clearing.

 

That will be 2 cents, please.

Hi Clyde,

As your images show, the dust cloud activity has expanded to almost cover the entire SPC. My lower resolution image displayed at Mars on July 14, 2018 SPC Dust covered shows the same. I think the poles are the last to succumb to a planet-wide dust storm. They are the coldest regions on Mars. Dust storm expansion requires the temperature of a dust cloud to increase. Apparently the temperature of dust clouds near the South polar region has increased sufficiently to overcome the cold temperature sink of the SPC. Notice also, the NPH is tan shaded now. If dust clouds cover both poles as well as the rest of the planet, then we have a global dust storm versus a planet-wide storm. In the completely dust covered Tharsus region, there is no area to expand to so the temperature of the region may go up without any expansion. I would like here what other people think about the process. Thanks.

Mercury again...the apparent size has increased a little (around 8 arcsec) and the phase noticeably narrower as  he  swings in towards us, starting to close in on the sun. Good but not great conditions for this shot.
