Received: 16April 2018 at 02:24 JST

Hi all,

Despite Meteoblue projecting very poor seeing conditions, I was up a bit earlier to try and catch the polar storm on Saturn, so Mars was at a lower altitude for these captures.

Some cloud and two dark spots appear to be in Hellas, although it also appears that there is a section of the basin that is clear of ice/cloud

Best regards, Clyde

Hi all

What a pleasure, and a huge relief, to have the C14 back in the observatory after having been exposed to extensive rainfall a few weeks ago.

Some interesting structure to the south polar cloud formations.

Following the last two, highly disrupted months, I am hoping that I can now settle into a routine for the coming months.

Best regards, Clyde

¤····Subject: Venus observations coordinated with Akatsuki

Received: 13 April 2018 at 11:51 JST

Dear all,

Akatsuki <http://akatsuki.isas.jaxa.jp/en/> is a space mission from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and has been performing observations of the atmosphere of Venus since the end of 2015. An extension of the mission until 2020 has been recently approved. The orbiter has several cameras onboard (UVI, IR1, IR2 and LIR) devoted to observe several levels of the clouds of Venus both on the night and dayside, using filters which cover from ultraviolet to infrared wavelengths. The orbiter also has a special camera for detecting lightning (LAC) and an ultra-stable oscillator (USO) to perform radio-occultation. Unfortunately, the infrared cameras IR1 and IR2 paused their observations since December 2016, so for our mission the collaboration with ground-based observers is a high priority in order to complement the observations to be performed with Akatsuki.

For these reasons, we have updated the protocols for the different ways in which collaborations with our mission can be undertaken. Those who wish to collaborate with Akatsuki with ground-based observations of Venus, can do this in several ways

<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1vJKqiyQkhQbkIgVhK0xpxCgH46bq8aqZ/view?usp=sharing>

- Observers can register in advanced their observations in this online document
   <https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/13xnrj39wwZCSnYjLf9QokpIMT8SfurBvhG5UVWUmRk0/edit?usp=sharing>
   .
- Observers who wish to combine data from Akatsuki and their own observations can request in advanced that Akatsuki observations adapts to some scientific goals (though with reasonable limitations) and private access to the Akatsuki data collected during the dates of their observations.
- We provide a website
<https://akatsuki.matsue-ct.jp/> with useful information for amateur and professional observers better planify their observations with Akatsuki:
- The geometry of Venus observations that can be perfomed from Akatsuki and ground-based facilities until 2020 can be consulted here

<https://akatsuki.matsue-ct.jp/?q=node/20>. You can also download from here a software (widgets for Windows and Linux) to generate especific graphs than can be freely included in your own observing proposals to  different observatories.

The spectral bands of interest for Venus observations can be consulted here

Also, the planified observations to be perfomed by the Akatsuki instruments will be regularly updated here

If you have doubts and/or questions, do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

Dear all,

The professional astronomy conference European Planetary Science Congress 2018 (EPSC) will be held from September 16 to September 21, 2018 in Berlin, Germany. This yearly conference gives an inspiring insight of the latest discoveries and the current status of Solar System astronomy and planetary science and wellcomes the participation of amateur astronomers.

In particular the AM1 session "Professional-amateur collaborations in small bodies, terrestrial, giant and exo planets studies" and the AM2 session "Juno Ground-Based Support from Amateurs" are organized by amateur astronomers together with professionals and are open to presentations by amateurs. We invite you to actively participate to these sessions by contributing a paper (fill in the abstract submission form in the  "Amateur Astronomy" program group, deadline May 16th, 2018) and/or to exchange views and ideas with other amateur and professional astronomers. Contributions will be oral talks and poster contributions. The language at the meeting will be English for all presentations.

Please note that this year EUROPLANET-2020 will provide budget to support amateurs from European countries. This budget will be allocated to in priority to active contributors (with oral or poster contributions, selected considering their scientific value and promoting diversity of participants from different countries). Depending on the budget left, amateurs only attending to the conference could also be (partially) funded (if you are interested, please let me know).

Please feel free to circulate this message to all those who might be interested in the event.

Looking forward your contribution or participation,

Marc DELCROIX and Ricardo HUESO,

(SOC members of EPSC2018 AM program)

Received: 7 April 2018 at 19:06 JST

Hi all,

We returned home on Wednesday from our wedding and honeymoon, which I hope draws to a close a period of nearly two months where my planetary imaging was heavily disrupted. Over this time, and during a period of torrential rainfall, the motorised roll-off roof of my observatory mysteriously opened by itself, exposing the C14 and mount to the deluge. The scope and mount have been stripped and cleaned and are currently being tested, and there is a possibility I may have them back over this weekend.

In the meantime, I have rather rapidly reinstalled my previous Meade 12” ACF back in the observatory. Polar alignment has not been fine-tuned , and collimation is also not perfect at this stage.

But at least I was able to capture the attached RGB and IR images of Mars this morning, with the South Polar Hood prominent.  The Vallis Marineris complex is just above the centre of the image.

Seeing was below average.

Best regards, Clyde

Dear Marc,

We are following the evolution of the spot since its first detection in March 29. In PVOL you can find the news we posted of the storm days ago and the first ephemeris for the event. The spot moves at a rate of -10.8 deg/day in System III according to all the images so far compiled. In any case, my recommendation is to observe and survey all Saturn longitudes.

Yes, the storm remembers to the 1994 event that took place in the southern polar area of Saturn and that we published in Science (2 Feb. 1996).

Best wishes

Hi Damian,

That is an excellent image, the trail I suspected on Anthony's image is there, and even an elongated feature preceding it (?). That shape is really unusual for me, I never saw such a shape on any of the storms I have been following since 2002, except for the 2010 GWS.

Are we witnessing an aftermath of the GWS like in 1994, and this one saturnian year after 1990 GWS?

I'll publish an update of the ephemeris tonight including all the observations I got till now.

Steady skies,

Interestingly its only the second storm on Saturn ive seen in the last two decades that i could actually see during the live video capture (the other being of course the great 2011 storm.)

The polar vortex and surrounding hexagon is also visible at the north pole.

The GRS and Io are nicely seen in this one taken under fair conditions. The strange bright batch s.p the GRS may be the beginnings of the STrD passing the GRS?

Hi all,

Finally managed to get an image of my asteroid (26732.) I noticed it was about to pass by two 13th magnitude spiral galaxies in Virgo this week and the asteroid is near opposition so it seemed a good time to try. You can clearly see its track on both nights almost exactly 24hrs apart. Many other asteroid tracks can be seen in the image as well as countless background galaxies. The two brigher spirals are NGC 4504 and 4487.

Asteroid is mag 18.5.

After buying some prints in
Paris in 1886, the Dutch painter became obsessed by Japanese art.

An exhibition in Amsterdam explores how that fascination shaped his work.

Hi all,

I am afraid my imaging schedule has been heavily impacted over the last 5 weeks as I spent substantial time at the bedside of my Dad(92) who peacefully slipped away from us on Monday. It was he who nurtured my early interest in astronomy and bought me my first small refractor when I was about 9 years old, living in Scotland. I've got nothing but gratitude and appreciation for all he did for me and my family- he will be sorely missed.

I returned home on Thursday and managed to catch Mars under average conditions yesterday morning, with the Hellas Basin again showing some interesting features. Possibly some dust in the right of the basin, and bright cloud or ice upper left.

Best regards, Clyde
