Received: 28 February 2015 at 19:40 JST

Hi all

2 Image sets and separate IR image from 26 Feb during the Io and double shadow transit.

Seeing conditions were fairly poor (unfortunately pretty standard for us at this time of year under the recent weather conditions)

RGB and IR-RGB images were generated from the same set of R(1933.8UT), G(1935.5UT) and B(1936.9UT) images. All at f27.5 (2.5x Televue Barlow). The IR was taken at 1942.0UT.

The separate IR image was taken at f33 (3x Televue Barlow) as I was closing up for the evening.

¤····Subject: A giant star has fallen

Received: 24 February 2015 at 16:18 JST

Dear all,

I feel the deepest sorrow to learn of the passing away of Donald PARKER. He himself was the history of evolution in the amateur planetary imaging from the silver-salt photography to the present-day digital imaging. Every old planetary photographer remembers the g Chick and Donfs Golden Combinationh : gas-hypered Tech Pan film/diluted Rodinal development. And we have been so many times surprised and stimulated by his superb planetary images including the Martian one still decorating the CMO/ISMO Façade taken on 8 February 2014 when the red planet was only 9.5 arcseconds across, showing that his imaging/processing performance was just surpassing the classical theoretical limit of optical resolution. For us Japanese amateur astronomers he was like the fastest skilful driver in an big American car leading the planetary imaging race, often defeated contemporary professional images. Yet, it was most pleasing to me to translate his New Year Opening Essays for CMO/ISMO into the Japanese versions ; his every line radiates his love for his family, friends, colleagues, and planetary astronomy as well. He really was a Genial Giant.

Good evening all

I captured two IR images taken at 16.50 and 16.53UT this evening.

Solis Lacus and Mare Sirenum are failry clearly seen, despite the conditions. It also appears that the SPC is captured in both images. I am not sure if this is "normal", but I have highlighted a brightish area extending from the SPC down the eastern limb of Mars. This is evident in both  images, and on checking, was also visible in yesterdays image. This is likely in the Argyre region? Any comments would be welcome.

I have been corresponded with Don since the 1980s and he was an icon at the ALPO meetings and other places. He encouraged many amateurs how to be a great imager and to do first-class planetary science.

This is very sad news.  Don sent us his last images of Jupiter just last month.

Don pioneered hi-res photography of the planets in the 1980s, and CCD imaging in the 1990s, and was still in the first rank of observers in the webcam era. For several years, he and Isao Miyazaki were unrivalled in the quality of their images with the new technology.   He really led the way in enabling amateurs to achieve the great uality of images that is now common. He was also one of the amateurs most respected by professional planetary scientists. His name will forever be remembered.

I regret that I never had the chance to meet him, though I know he was always courteous and helpful to everyone in correspondence.

May I offer my condolences, and those of the BAA, to his family.

¤····Subject: Mars images compared with MARCI/MRO

Received: 15 February 2015 at 20:18 JST

Hi, all

I had a quick review of the MARCI weather reports, comparing with my images since I restarted imaging after my operation on 29 Dec.

I only noted two possible interesting points:

a) 29 Dec 2014: On the MARCI images of this date, it looks like there is a bright patch in the NW corner of Hellas. My RGB, IR and R (to a lesser extent) images possibly hint that this may have been captured? However, with size and conditions, I would not claim a confirmed capture.

http://www.kwasan.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~cmo/cmons/2013/141229/CFs29Dec14.jpg

b) 16 January 2015: The MARCI comments indicate that Arsia Mons was covered by a bright water/ice cloud for the whole week. I note that there was a bright spot approximately in this area in the G image of the 16 Jan. Having said that , there is also a bright spot in the IR image in the same(but not apparently exactly the same) area. I just need to check the time of the images, as there may have been some rotation between them(I try and capture my R,G and B's as close as possible together. I sometimes have a gap between these and my IR images). Seeing conditions also were poor.  I have not tried to check with Winjupos as yet, and again, I would not claim that this is a confirmed capture.

Good evening all

As you would have gathered, I have been having poor weather and exceptionally poor seeing conditions which prevented any worthwhile imaging . On top of that I did a bit of tweeking on my collimation and got it horribly wrong(!) and just did not have any conditions that were good enough to rectify it until a night or two back. This evening conditions were a bit better and I managed to capture Mars at an altitude of 17 deg and a diameter of 4.3".

Attached are both R and IR images. Mare Cimmerium is central and prominent. Mare Sirenum is towards the eastern limb and Mare Tyrrhenum on the west. In the R image, I suspect that Xanthus may be visible between Eridania and Ausonia? A bit more detail showing in the IR image with possibly a bright patch in the region of Ausonia. I cannot claim that the SPC is visible, although there is maybe just a suspicion of it in the IR image.

Any comments are welcome.

Dear Masatsugu,

I received some communications from Tom Dobbins about Don Parker.  As you know, he is very ill, and apparently failing.  He may not have much more time to live.  I would appreciate it if you kept this private at this stage, but thought you neednft to know what the situation is.

I continue to ponder the continuation of the Pluto calculations and hope to get back to it once my other pressures let up a bit.

   Best,

Bill SHEEHAN (Willmar, MN)

Hi Guys Here are Some Jupiter images off my white light solar scope a 7inch AP , along with some white light solar shots. The Ha full disc image is from a Coronado 90mm DS solarmax scope. A 6 panel mosaic, I cant quite get it down to 4. I have reduced it by .7 to halve the file size. The close up of the enormous filament is picked off the full size image. Interesting to think that it is twice as long as from here to the moon.

Still experimenting with Jupiter off the f9 AP 178 T. I just resurrected my filter wheel to try some LRGB as I fancy it needs a little refocus between channels.

Best wishes

Hi guys,
The poor seeing continues with the easterlies... post-GRS longitudes there.

Hi Guys Itfs been a while since I visited the Moon. As it was first quarter and at a reasonable altitude I thought I would check out my recently acquired AP 178 T on it. I switched between its prime focus of f9 and f18 .

This was the first time also that I had tried the ZWOfs 1280 x 960 chip for size on the moon. Nice coverage ! It made a nice change to have such a wide field view and still at a reasonable resolution without the hard work of mosaics . Seeing was about 5-6 , appearing better at f9 than f18 of course. The moon varied in altitude between 40‹ and 56‹

While I was gout thereh I also took a few avis of Jupiter with a green ir blocked filter, over about 8 minutes.

Best wishes

Hi all

I did manage to get a few R and IR avi's on the 30 January, but was not happy with any processed results on the evening. I had another go at processing today and although the results are still not good, am submitting "for the record". A little bit of detail visible, more so in IR.

Best regards, Clyde
