Hi All,

Have attached mars images from 26 December session. Mars in the view field was no other than a bouncing fuzzy fire-ball. Again through IR685 filter, captured 80.000 frames with minimal ROI, 1.0msec shatter speed, averaged 263fsp, then stacked 3%., just managed to squeeze out the shape of the major features.

¤••••• Subject: Geometric albedo of martian features on 2020/11/17

Received: 26 December 2020 at 01:17 JST

Hi all, this is a little photometric work on my series of images from November 17th. It depicts how much a few selected features on Mars can reflect the Sunlight, i.e. their albedo (which is measured out of 1 = perfect reflection)

This starts from calculating the five apparent magnitudes of the planet (three references stars in Pisces), and transforming them into absolute planetary magnitudes (as if Mars was 1 AU from the Sun, and 1 AU from the observer). Then a comparison can be made of how much sunlight is reflected, after correcting as well the orbital parameters.

The equations have been found from Richard Schmude's and Anthony Mallama's references in the scientific litterature. The results are quite exact in V, R, I looking at the references but a bit faint in UV and B. This comes certainly from an average photometry in these two bands, but could also partly reflect the reality of a planet that was probably darker than usual in the short wavelengths due to a very small and dull polar cap, and an almost complete absence of white clouds.

Every area measured is normalized in intensity as if it had the same size than the whole planet.

Nothing to discover really from this little study, but this was above all an exercise to prepare for the next Jupiter apparition where I intend to perform such a work as well 🙂

Merry Christmas to everyone !

Hi ALL,

Seeing hasnft been cooperative at all these days. Attached here a set of images from the 06 December session with a disappointing seeing condition.

Dust event along southern tropical~temperate zone seems to be calming down, while some sporadic dust activity suspected in the southern circumpolar area. Along the northern coast line of Maria Sirenum and Cimmerium runs a similar-shaped darker reddish gValhallah turning north at the Medusafs Teardrop, connecting with Elysium via Cerberus to form a gigantic redish dark serpentine cutting across the entire Martian disk, a strange gHeaven to Hell to Another Heavenh line!!

It would be interesting If the long vaguely light streak just off inside the morning terminator parallel to the dawn line is a new born dust belt occurred at the boundary of the night and daytime where the temperature and other meteorological conditions heavily change. But itfs likely to be an artifact due to over processing.

Hi all,

Mars on November 26th. Good seeing, with the morning Tharsis volcanoes casting their red shadows due to grazing sunlight.

Note again some particular behavior of the martian ground from blue to UV. The current Mars at southern summer is poor in white clouds and this allows us to see such a subtle information.

The sky is now closed again at my site, maybe I'll get more nights past mid-December...

Dear all,

Here are a few more Mars images obtained since Oct 17. Seeing has been poor, undoubtedly due to the large aperture, low altitude and passing fronts, and periods of clear sky very short. However it has been possible to extract some detail on a few dates, including some more images of the dust cloud activity.

I am including a couple of really poor images for completeness, you never know if there turns out to be something interesting.

With best regards,

Johan
