Hi all,

I just managed to catch Mars as the recent regular cloud moved in. As far as I can see there is still some dust activity over the Noachis region, and although there may be some residual dust in the atmosphere, generally this area appears to be clearing.

With Mars dropping rapidly in size, I have changed back to my "normal" template, for ease of viewing.

It was a pity to miss out on most of the recent action, but well done to my friends in the East who managed to cover developments beautifully.

Best regards, Clyde

Hi all,

Here is a series of Mars images taken through photometric UBVRI filters. The seeing was excellent. This is for a project to perform a small reflectance study of the Martian details (to be carried out later).

As an interesting remark, you can note a curious phenomenon of inversion of albedos in the UV, Mare Cimmerium and Sirenum being brighter than the northern deserts - and this is not by clouds. This can be spotted on other UV images as well.

Best wishes

Hi all, here's an image of Mars from last night in reasonable seeing.
The dust activity is prominent to the lower left portion of the image, many of the usual features are hidden. Syrtris Major at top is still visible although there appear to be many streams of dust below it and toward
Hellas.

Rather good conditions which allowed me to catch the dust storm arriving on Elysium and Arcadia Planitia.

The small austral polar cap is visible, as well as the boreal veil.

Infrared image is rather detailed, with Olympus Mons apparently touched by the storm as seeon on RGB image following:
http://astrosurf.com/delcroix/images/planches/mars2020-11-21_22-21-00_ir685_md.jpg

RGB with 50% infrared luminance, to pretend making better images ;) :

Pure RGB with dust storm more visible, unfortunately with a strong limb artifact:

Blue image with a small protrusion on terminator, probably a small cloud (it rotates with the planet on two images):

Very poor conditions, but I was having withdrawal symptoms due to the recent weather, so persevered....

From the latest images, it looks like most of the dust activity has headed south-east towards Hellas, with some residual clouds over the southern M Erythraeum regions.

Received: 26 November 2020 at 20:37 JST

Dear ALL,

A large regional dust storm like the present one seems to be one of those Martian seasonal annual events.

Besides the well-known 1973 and 2005 events, Christophe Pellier (Responsable de Section MARS/SAF) has reviewed the past records to find a lot of possible examples through old MGS data, and more recent amateur observations such as in 2007 and in 2018 as well.

Here I am presenting a montage from the NASAfs MRO MARCI Weather Report for the week of 27 February 2017 showing an example of fairly large scale regional dust storm exactly in the same season and in the same area as the present one.

This storm then gradually abated with progressing weeks.

Sharing a Mars image from October 13 as well as three more recent. Weather has been absolutely horrible here - warm but windy, cloudy and very turbulent. The month following opposition just disappeared under a nearly constant cloud deck, without any imaging possible.

The November images show the regional dust storm on the evening limb. Hoping to get better views in the near future with this region closer to the meridian.

Hi all,

I managed to find a short, unexpected gap in the recent rainy conditions for this view of Mars yesterday evening. It shows the western regions of the recent extensive dust storm, and to me, it appears that this region may be starting to clear. However, dust is still clearly seen over the Argyre region and extensively across Mare Erythraeum and possibly Chryse. Ascraeus Mons is prominent extending through cloud at lower right.

With almost saturated conditions, the hair dryer had to be put to good use.

Hi all, seeing last night wasn't great, however I could see an interesting feature on the rising terminator so I processed the data to get the attached image.

There seems to be some high altitude dust (?) that's visible in the pre-dawn sky at lower left, I've also included a stretched version of the image to make this more visible. It was clearly visible in all filters, from UV425 to IR750 longpass.

Elsewhere in the image we see the dust activity becoming more widespread.

cheers, Anthony

I especially love on this image you can make out Gale Crater - the curved indentation at the end of the left hand projection of Sinus Gomer. This is home to Martian rover Curiosity. Toward bottom the volcanoes of Elysium Mons and Hecates Tholus are nicely visible. The small SPC at top its nearing its minimum.

Received: 20 November 2020 at 06:48 JST

Hi guys,

Sorry to send this data once again, but I found another error in my preceding correction.

This is the corrected reflectance spectrum of Mars. It is now more in accordance with previous data of the same kind that shew a luminosity peak around 700 nm, and not between 600 and 700 as in my last sending.

The IR part has been painfully corrected from the Earth bands turned into maths artefacts, since the Sun spectrum I used to calculate the profile does not contain those bands.

Please replace again :)

Poor conditions and a race against thickening cloud.

I just managed the poor IR as the clouds ended the session, but included it for completeness anyway.

It did however allow me a first glimpse of the dust in Valles Marineris.

Incoming evening cloud is the order of the day here, but hopefully get some breaks.

Hi all,

The dust storm is moving quickly, and has extended to the south west of Solis Lacus, with a concentrated cloud centred over S Lacus itself. A preceding bank of cloud can be seen further to the south-west. Interesting that the clouds also show quite bright in G and B, which, as best I can understand, indicates that they are mixed cloud(Dust/Water ice/CO2). Olympus Mons can be seen lower centre.

There is a lot of dust activity visible, bright streams of dust in Valles Marineris and to its north.

There are extensive clouds of dust visible over the southern hemisphere as well although more diffuse.

The normal dark features of Valles Marineris are mostly obscured however a small part of the end is visible on the left hand side in this image.

Hi,

For planet observation, I think it is best to make a clean RGB. Using each color channel in your end photo brings out clouds and Mars details the most (in my opinion).

This observation shows two small cloud fields close to the polar ice cap, which are parallel to the polar ice cap. On the edge, see morning clouds also in the Arctic area.

Telescope C14, camera Basler 640, Chroma RGB filters.

Dear Mr. Murakami,

Since last year I have passed by hard conditions for observations due to cloudy skies and technical issues. Additionally, this year has been specially hard due to pandemic of Covid-19, because I have my observatory far from my house. I passed six months without contact with my telescope because quarantine and country restrictions.

Recently, I started again and I expect to produce new images in short time. I will continue sharing those with you as soon as possible.

This is a LRGB image under good conditions.

Dears,
Mars which turns out ok in infrared, with a bright albedo zone in
Elysium Planitia:
http://astrosurf.com/delcroix/images/planches/mars2020-11-12_22-18-54_ir685_md.jpg

Same infrared colorized (keeping 50% of color luminance) :

Color version has a worse resolution but shows clearly boreal polar veil, and morning clouds on the terminator :

And a narrow band blue image:

Steady skies,
