Damian,

This is a true beauty - very reminiscent of the early drawings/sketches of Mars! So glad that you are sketcher - I want to help my amatuer astronomers master that skill also!

BTW: I might use it as a group pic for PACA_Mars!

Thanks,

Beautiful drawing!

From 1965 until about 2000, 25 years, I was purely a visual observer and made drawings of the moon and planets. Then I got into imaging and visual observations became less and less important. Now that I have turned 70 I am going to try to get back into drawing areas on the Moon and planets, even using an image at the same time to get the main features accurate as Richard points out. Here is one of my old drawings from the distant past.

Dear Damian and Robin

Thank you. I am glad Damian was moved to sketch the planet.... and why not? Nice work, and you did well. It is hard to put everything down on paper when there is so much to see, and like in drawing portraits, the main features must be accurate first, as they certainly were. (By the way, I do portraits, and always do the eyes and nose first, because unless they are correct, there is no point going further!)

To Robin, this version of Antoniadi was published by him at the end of 1909 in the BAA journal. As he later remarked, the printers made the reproduction too hard... the original pencil sketch being softer. On my web tutorial on drawing, still there on the BAA website front page, you can find Antoniadi's glorious coloured version, drawn specially for Camille Flammarion for the planned but never realised third volume of his monumental work, La Planete Mars. Flammarion, a keen canallist, was wise to stop his chronology in 1907, because in 1909 the canals were finally demolished, by his former Assistant!

All the best

Hi Damian,

A very useful comparison with historic observations -- excellent work.

I found this picture of Mars made by Antoniadi on virtually the same date in 1909. (Don't know where I copied it from -- sorry.) Others in Splendour of the Heavens from the same apparition by other observers show more canals!

Hi all,

A spell of near perfect seeing last night allowed for some truly splendid views of Mars - the best ive had in some years. I made a visual drawing of the view displaying the classic central Syrtis Major/Hellas view so famous in drawings of past visual observers such as Antoniadi.

Hi All,

Attached here a set of images from 28 September session. Seeing was variable while transparency was good.

Visually (X700 binocular viewer) Arsia Mons orographic cloud was distinct, pure whitish, not bluish. Olympus Mons was remarkable as a shaded relief, sunlit western flank wore beautiful rosy tint.

Along the northern coasts of Maria Sirenum to Cimmerium ran a string of bright spots. I saw a similar but more glaring chain of bright tiny spots there around the opposition day of 1971 great apparition with my 25cm F/7.6 Newtonian X480, kind of an opposition effect, I guess.

Hi all, here's an image of Mars from this morning in reasonable seeing.
Olympus Mons is prominent at top right as it sets, cloud is visible to its south over the Tharsis volcanoes, in particular over and around Arsia Mons.

Limb cloud is visible on the left as well as over the north polar region at top.

5 RGBB Image sets spanning 30 minutes were derotated and merged in Winjupos to make this image.

cheers, Anthony

Dear Murakami-sama,

Please find attached my latest Mars image on Sept 27, 2020.

I noticed that the center of the ice cap has been slightly shifted off the south pole.

Then I found your article about the melting ice cap on the September report #09, which is quite interesting.

I also found that my image was capturing the shadow of Olympus Mons. I was quite excited about this.

Hello all
I had a go at imaging Mars this morning at about 2am LT - it was cold.
Seeing was pretty good from my place, but the low 45 degree altitude of Mars made the image wobble a fair bit.

Attached is a composite of two images showing western hemisphere morning 'hazes' as well as evening cloud on the eastern terminator above mountains.
Olympus Mons is at
7 o'clock near the eastern terminator.

Hi all, here's a colour image of Mars from September 20 in good seeing, a bit delayed as I wanted to wait and test the new Phobos/Deimos code coming in the next version of Winjupos that gives a more accurate prediction and makes it more reliable to use these moons to set the measurement template. Hopefully this will be released publicly in the near future.

I used 7 x RGBB recordings over about 70 minutes to make this image.

Hi all, here's an image of Mars from this morning through a 750nm longpass filter.

The seeing was poor with strong jetstream blurring, 5 images captured between 1544utc and 1630utc were combined to get this result.

Olympus Mons can just be seen setting on the right hand side.

The large bright region of Elysium is prominent at the top of the image.

Hello,

* Mars observation 22/9/2020
Here then my observation of Tuesday (9/22) in the early morning.
You see a lot of cloud around the North Pole (you can see this clearly on the blue observation) and morning clouds on the edge of Mars.
The South pole is getting smaller and smaller.
Telescope C14, camera Basler 640, Chroma RGB filters and 1 degree dispersion wedge.

* Mars observation 14/9/2020
I have edited this observation somewhat differently from what you may be used to.
This time I chose to do it a little less than usual. Mars observations are made with RGB filters and are also used in the processing of clean RGB (so no RRGB or LRGB etc.).

I have left the large one exactly how I record it with the C14 at 10 meters focal distance.

When using pure RGB perception, the sharpness may become less, but that doesn't matter this time. No d-rotation done.

* Mars 14-9-2020 00h43 UT (winjupos)
Here then the impression of Mars that morning.

Dear Reiichi,

It's quite a long time since we last wrote to each other. I hope that your recovery is complete? I have stopped writing things about Mars since many years because I focused on producing some technical methodology knowledges for amateurs, but I have been resuming my interesting for amateur science for 2 years now.

I think the 2005 visual aspect (I missed it visually this year, even if I did take a visual glance) was more remarkable not only because of its color but because of its brightness. Maybe it varies from year to year (it was more subtle this year), yet I would begin to think that it would be something like a last state of the south polar background dust activity due to the sublimation of the seasonal CO2 ice. Earlier this year in August, some true dust clouds have been imaged over the SPR and now in late september (Ls 275/280 as of 2020) the circular haze looks gone, so do dust clouds. In 2005 from September, the SPC looked free from any dust activity or haze. Probably when the sublimation is over, no more dust activity can happen - moreover because the residual summer cap is very small. So we could have something like Ls 260 = true dust clouds, Ls 270 = circular dust haze, Ls 280 = nothing !

I hope that you will try multiband imaging. Color cameras are very good nowadays, but they can't produce true blue images and too few amateurs are doing so.

Stay safe as well and let's keep in touch,

Christophe PELLIER (Nantes, FRANCE)

Dear Christophe,

Great comparison! And your complete multispectral image sets are always most effective to analyze Martian meteorological phenomena.

On my end, I have just recovered from rather severe kidney disease, and I regard this apparition of Mars as a training period to establish my own routine of imaging/processing before shifting to multispectral band observation. Still I have the DNA of visual observer like as you or Damian, every time before starting image capturing I enjoy Mars image visually through binocular viewer X700. And the Martian seasonal event you verifiedgsouthern circum-polar cap dust haze bavoirshwas quite bright visually also to my eyes, often more conspicuous than in the processed final image showed.

Is it due to its green-yellowish tint?

Hi all,
Here a late plate from September 2nd.
A large circular dust haze is recorded above the south polar region.

This phenomenon was observable in August 2005 (pj), when the planet was at the same exact season (Ls = 270), and was remarkable at the time, almost perfectly circular on some images, and quite bright visually.

https://www.kwasan.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~cmo/cmons/2005/050816/M2005-08-16-CPL.jpg

15 years later we can confirm that is a seasonal feature !

Dear all,

Attaching here my Mars images obtained this apparition (except for July 27 which I already sent).

Seeing has been very variable and only a couple of dates have allowed detailed images to be recorded.

The August 30 image is the best yet.

I have now switched to an ASI 462MC camera, 2.7x APM ED barlow (better coated than the previous barlow with internal reflections evident) and added a 685 nm filter.

The SPC has been retreating with internal details and ice islands at the rim, a nearly constant haze has been present at the northern limb, but no orographic clouds on the dates I have imaged.

No other significant activity seen, such as dust clouds.

All the best,

Hi all, here are images of Mars from this morning through various filters in very good seeing.

I've included a composite RGB image however there is also a lot to see in some of the discrete blue channel images so I've included them as well.

The 425/50 images (400-450nm) show interesting structure when strongly enhanced, but also in the normal Blue (400-500nm) images there is a feature visible on the setting limb in the early part of the session which was no longer visible after about an hour. I'm guessing this is dust or some sort of transient cloud.

If you're interested in investigating any of this please let me know and I'll share the raw stacks with you.

Hi all, some very good seeing this morning on Mars, here's a true colour RGB image showing Syrtis Major at top, Hellas basin and the South polar Cap at bottom and Meridiani at left.

The crater Huygens is prominent near the centre of the image and Schiaparelli to the left.

The lower right of the image, ie the setting limb, appears partly obscured by dust or haze. Blue cloud is visible at the northern limb.

Dear Jim,

I saw your paper when the ALPO journal came out, as I am a member, but thank you for sending the copy.

If you will kindly refer to my 1999 BAA Memoir or catalogue about the Martian dust storms - Roger has a copy, I think - you will see that this event is described as an ordinary local dust storm.

It was also illustrated in Sky and Telescope at the time, and I gave a reference to it.

The region is prone to local events of this type and several reports mention a slight yellowish tint, so I don't agree that it could have been the result of an impact.

The complex series of changes in albedo of the area west of Solis Lacus are also discussed in my publication, resulting from a succession of events of different magnitude.

Good wishes

Dears,

I had very good conditions that sunday morning, which allowed me to get probably my most detailed colored Mars.

Valles Marineris is setting on the limb, and the view on Tharsis dome is superb, with Olympus Mons caldera (and maybe the volcano shadow?), and the other volcanoes.

Blue images show the boreal polar hood, orographic cloouds on Arsia and Pavonis Mons and on other reliefs, in Nectaris Fossea south of Valles Marineris.

It's so good to get good resolution on a  planet high in the sky, for a change ... :)
