Hi all, some good seeing this morning on Mars, here's a true colour RGB image made by combining nearly an hours worth of RGBB data.

The hard part with combining data in WinJupos is to get the template rotation correct, it's quite frustrating trying to do this on surface features so in the end I gave up and used the moons.

Attached for your amusement is a 60-second stack of overexposed IR650 longpass showing Phobos and Deimos (indicated also by WJ). The other constellations of marks are all from hot pixels, you can see that they all have the same pattern from the alignment and stacking, whereas Phobos and Deimos are single images. Note Deimos also has a bright pixel added by WJ as part of the measurement template.

Sir,

Attached are Mars images from September 13. Average seeing (3/5) for the first set.

Clouds rolled in for while and then cleared out for good seeing (4/5) during the second set.

Below average transparency for both sets. The cloud over Arsia Mons was quite bright.

Hi all,

My conscience finally got the better of me in the early hours of this morning, with Mars having suffered some neglect from my side with so much attention on the developments on Jupiter.

The IR was the best, but conditions not great for the RGB. If nothing else, a nice low res view of Solis Lacus.

Best regards, Clyde

Attached a set of Mars images from 10 September session.
Between clouds image capturing, seeing was terrible, Mars was like bouncing somthing in the view field, though the transparency was great to be able to glimpsed the winter Milkyway, and felt relieved to see not so faint  Betelgeuse!

Visually, northern desert area weared a beautiful rosy tint, Sinus Sabaeus/Meridiani and Mare Acidalium slightly bluish, and the rest of darkar area looked to be warm toned.

Dear Mars Observers,

Here are some images from the 7th, when I noted an interesting terminator irregularity in the southern hemisphere, around L=116, B=-20.

It looks like an indentation or a wave, and was present in all the images, in all colours, but most clear in the first one, the red from 02:38.8. Ifve shown an enlargement of the terminator here. Ifve never seen this appearance before.

Is it a shadow of a wave of dust?

Hi all,

Some images taken under good seeing.

The planet has just passed southern summer solstice now and the dust activity looks very low.

By the end of the month, the boreal storm zones of Acidalium, Utopia and Arcadia should resume their activity.

The orographic cloud of Arsia Mons, the only one active at the current season, its caught at its maximum near sunset.

Dear All,

 https://www.kwasan.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~cmo/cmomn4/CMO403.pdf

Valles Marineris System may be quite spectacular with your view, but I think it's likely an illusion due to the confusing mimetic albedo pattern inside of the Martian Grand Canyon. Whereas the real relief of Olympus Mons seems to be about to be perceptible! I will try again, hopefully with higher resolution.

I'm not able to pull my usual telescope (8" f/20 Mak-Cass) because of the hip but I'm pleased with the results considering I'm using a 6" Dynamax telescope. Despite what you have heard, this telescope is of excellent quality!

Received: 9 September 2020 at 16:53 JST

Hi All,

Nightly dense river fog obscured Mars these days. I am attaching here amontage from the images taken on 03 September.

Reproducibility of the detail seems to be good.

Central flank of Olympus Mons coming from the western limb shows reddish hue, this was distinct visually too. Images vary a bit from one to one, may be due to changing seeing/transparency, and to the handlings of image processing also.

As for Valles Marineris, no clear change of its gshadows and lightsh as it approaching to the eastern evening terminator (which would be a proof of detecting shadowed 3D image of the great Martian canyon) seems to be shown in this series of Mars images.

I will try again in the post opposition opportunity of this apparition.

Outstanding Damian, as always.

Are you imaging from the UK at the moment?

I think the altitude of Mars is quite decent there now and about the same as we have here in Australia ~ 45-50 degrees.

For us in the subsequent apparitions Mars gets lower, whilst for you guys in the Northern Hemisphere it will get higherc.although smaller. For us, when itfs good itfs very, very good and when itfs bad itfs rotten :-D, whereas for you there is always a compromise. I think 2020 is the best of these for quite some time.

It seems to me that the atmosphere has cleared out quite a lot now. What do you think?

Ifm looking forward to the run into opposition, as I think there will be some spectacular viewing and imaging.

All the best,

Niall MacNEILL (AUSTRALIA)

It looked spectacular to the naked eye. The photos make red Mars look duller.

Here's an image of Mars from this morning,

I had to use IR750 for red due to the seeing conditions, and so there is not much detail in Green or Blue.

The south polar cap is visible at the bottom and some blue cloud at top on the limb.

Hi All,
Attached a Mars image from
03 September 2020.

A powerful typhoon was approaching to western Japan, but the seeing was no bad.

Visual image through X700 binocular viewer was awesome, thanks to the large phase angle I enjoyed a 3D billiard cue ball like image, yes, with this resolution Martian surface was very smooth, exept Valles Marineris area looked almost like an elongated shadowed 3D depression!

A large part of the southern highland sorounding SPC looked to be coverd with green-yellowish grey dust (airborne? surface deposition?). Argyre vaguely discernible.

I've been keeping away from combining morning and evening sessions due to a few health issues, but felt good enough to give Mars a crack this morning.

Nice to see it getting to a significant size, and there appears to be quite extensive cloud over the planet, particularly in the north polar region.
