Hi all,

As good a time as any to circulate a Mars image set from this morning, as I am keeping an eye on the Mars 2020 launch countdown on one of my monitors (2mins!).

Watching the various briefings recently, this is one amazing mission. Go Perseverance! Mars awaits you.

The view is similar to yesterday with conditions not quite as good.

Best regards, Clyde

Hi all,

My Mars imaging has been impacted by a number of factors over the last month or so, but watching and listening to the briefings on the upcoming launch of the latest NASA rover, "Perseverance", was enough motivation to get me out of bed this morning.

Hellas is just round the corner of the upper right limb. A subdued Elysium is at lower centre. M Cimmerium sweeps down from upper left towards the arrowhead of Tritonis S, with the two S.Gomer extensions visible at centre.

Not great seeing, but also not terrible either.

Best regards, Clyde

Terrific images Gary.  Every detail is sharp.

Regarding the Mitchel Mons, they may be a bit early. In 2018 they looked about the same as yours for Ls 250 and 252. See sites.google.com/site/trailtopmarsastronomy/home/mars-in-2018

and scroll down to September 15 and 17 respectfully. And actually your images show what looks like a hook at the Eastern end. Everyone could try and continue recording images of the Mons and see what develops.

Thanks.

Hope everyone is doing well.
I picked up a pre-owned C11 edge during the off season which so far has star tested pretty well.

The martian atmosphere seemed hazy visually in the telescope but the major features were still readily observable.
Seems dust storm is subsiding.

Hi all,

Yesterday as weather was looking optimal here with low humidity and excellent transparency i drove 290km to one of the darkest sites in the country to attempt to photograph the comet. I located at Hartland Point, Devon which is rated at Bortle 1-2 sky quality but also with an ocean horizon to the north and west.

The view of the night sky here was possibly the finest i have ever had from this country. M33 could be seen with the naked eye, and the Milkyway was remarkable stretching from horizon to horizon.

The comet itself was a grand sight indeed, and this was by far the best view i've had of it. Visually the dust tail could be seen extending to Dubhe (Alpha Ursae Majoris) with averted vision.

A very tiring but worthwhile trip!

Hi, all

Image set from this morning with Syrtis Major approaching the terminator at left, S Sabeaus and S Meridiani extending across the centre towards the right and Hellas at upper left. I believe it is the Mitchell Mons that can be seen as separated from the main polar cap. The condition of Deltonon S, situated between Syrtis Major and S Sabeaus, was recently noted by Damian Peach. Although there is a general sense of dustiness, the IR shows some detail in the albedo features.

Best regards, Clyde

Sir,

Attached is a set of Mars images from July 19. Good seeing (4/5). Good transparency. No clouds. Somewhat humid. Fog rolled in just after 9:00UT. No ADC was used. The "Mountains of Mitchel" appear to be detaching from the south polar cap. Small cloud near north polar region.

Herefs a collection of images from the last two weeks. I have had generally good seeing; best was on July 12-13. Also, improbably, the GRS has been on view most of the occasions I have been out.

The most striking things to me are (a) the complex turbulence of the NEB, with so much dark grey material on the S edge of it that sometimes it tricked me into (briefly) thinking there might have been a meteorite strike, and (b) the brilliance and sharpness of SEBZ preceding the GRS.
