Hi all,

This was the only reasonable result from a short session of abysmal seeing this morning, as I was trying to detect any carryover of the dust storm activity further to the east. Olympus Mons is at lower left.

Best regards, Clyde

Regarding the parallel streaks in the Northern Hemisphere in Tsuyoshi Arakawa's composite image and in his IR image, it appears to me that his camera was oriented so that its horizontal dimension corresponded to the the RA (east & west) direction on the sky. He rotated his image nicely during processing, and this makes the streaks appear to be not horizontal. If you look carefully at his red color-component image, you will see in the Southern Hemisphere another set of streaks perpendicular to the more prominent ones in the Northern Hemisphere. I think that they are a sensor line artifacts.

This is a fine image, with good detail, and reveals much about the dust storm.

I do not feel comfortable talking about artifacts in images, but I offer my assessment because it was brought up already. I hope that it is not interpreted as negative criticism, for I try to be positive all  the time. Every image has artifacts, and the main challenge is not to eliminate artifacts but to successfully image that which is not artifactual.

Hi Richard and Roger.

It looks like the Western edge of the dust clouds has retreated Eastward.

But now it looks like dust clouds cover most of the visible Northern Hemisphere.

The wave pattern could be artifacts but I don't think so.

Please see attachment courtesy Tsuyoshi Arakawa.

Good seeing,

Clyde --

The small dark feature SW of OM appears to me to be what has been called Biblis Fretum. It is an occasional site of cloud development, particularly when the W clouds are seen in Tharsis. It may correspond to Gordii Dorsum, a mountainous ridge that's located there.

Hi all,

A quick image set from this morning. Although all the excitement (dust storms in and N/NW of Valles Marineris) has already rotated into the dark, itfs always worthwhile (as Richard McKim has mentioned to me many times) keeping an eye on what's happening elsewhere.

Olympus Mons is just in view at lower left. In the IR there is a feature SW of OM that looks a bit unfamiliar (Eumenides region?). I'm also afraid this may add some fuel to the fire of the recent comments on the colouration of the SPC. I fully appreciate that I am still learning like a hound dog, and can only process as best I know how at this stage. Plenty still to learn, and I might just have to have a look at Damianfs latest tutorialsc...

On a more personal note, I may be putting out a few less images than normal, as it looks like I may have picked up another chest cold (all rather disconcerting given what's happening in this area and the country), and I am being ultra-conservative in terms of getting plenty of rest and continue to self-isolate as best I can. Hopefully come out the other side quickly and be back to full speed for the Jupiter and Saturn oppositions in July.

Take care and best regards, Clyde.

Hi, Jim, all

I would be a bit careful about reading too much into the colour in the SPC.

This was a quick process at the end of a very long and intense day of image capture and processing. I was pretty exhausted!

I would check other comparable images to see if they are similar.

However the recent dust activity is very real and interesting, if not the most popular develop for the Mars community!

I should be able to see the area sometime mid-end of this coming week.

Best regards and stay safe, Clyde

Hello everyone,

@Mars around this time is globally dusty. A dust storm occurred on June 22 near Aurorae Sinus.

Look at the image on June 22nd. The Marineris Gorge looks like a bright yellowish band as it did in 2018. This shows the dust spread over the valley.

@The sunny part is recorded black like the south side of the dust storm. In Clyde's image on June 26th, the inside of the SPC is blue because the contrast of the red image is strongly processed. In this image, the northern edge of Mare Cimmerium is dark. When it's faint with dust, it's natural to treat the contrast sparingly.

@ If you are shooting, please be careful.

That blue ice on the SPC is interesting. The first thing that comes to mind is H2O ice, or maybe a CO2 ice cloud.

To selected observers

I thought there was some local dust activity evident in an image posted at ALPO Japan the other day, but here is proof of activity in this email received in the past half hour from Mark Lonsdale (Australia) relative to his images taken between 18 and 19h UT on June 25.

I hope you can follow the activity further, though some will not be able to see the location for a few days. I will send an email alert and place a message in the BAA website.

Good observing

2020 June 26 (from the breakfast table)

------------------------------------------------------

Hi Richard,

A collection of images from this morning.  I think there may be a dust storm starting up!   Here is a compilation from early this morning local time in Canberra, showing a possible dust plume in the vicinity of Lunae Planum, north of Valles Marineris.  The feature is most prominent in the R and IR685 channels, but seeing was not great for me and the G and B channels were poor, and deteriorated towards the end when I captured the IR image.

I present the R image with an enlargement of the possible plume in the composite, and also attach the R image separately.  The RGB image looks dusty, and there appear to be streaks of dusty clouds in Coprates and Ganges Chasms, if I am not mistaken.

Hi all,

A very brief, but rewarding session in brightening sky this morning.

Elysium at lower right. I am a bit suspicious of a subtle light feature at lower left, most noticeable in G, but the RGB looks to me like it may have a dust component. It could just be cloud (although not that prominent in B), but worth watching as it appears to be quite large.

The upper right limb, towards Hellas, is noticeably brighter.

Hi all,

Despite the lengthy patch of generally below average seeing I have been having, I have found some decent conditions just before dawn the last few days, with Mars near the meridian.

Elysium, lower centre, is quite subdued in the RGB, but can be made out quite clearly in the IR.

The Gale crater extension in S Gomer is almost centre. Fine features are becoming visible across Eridania /Ausonia regions in the south. M. Chronium extends along the edge of the SPC.

Some good seeing here, especially last night June 23, from some periods of high pressure, combating the 16º maximum altitude.

All these produced by the same method, usually a run of 3 or 4 60s videos combined and derotated, but sometimes I find it better just to use the best 60s.

Hi, all

I'm afraid Mars has taken a bit of a back seat this year with Jupiter and Saturn running ahead of it towards opposition. But its time will come.... My alarm didn't go off for my planned Jupiter session, so I decided to have a quick look at Mars as it was close to the meridian.

The S Gomer extensions are well seen, with Syrtis Major on the right limb, Hellas is at upper right, and the way the SPC is cracking up, you would think it knew what was happening down here on Earth. I noted an interesting large ring like feature directly above Gomer in the southern Hesperia region, best seen in R.

Hi allC

At least at the start of my session, I had some reasonable seeing this morning and I was able to capture this image set of Mars, before the seeing dramatically degenerated for my Jupiter session.

S Meridiani is at centre left with Niliacus Lacus and M Acidalium at lower centre. M Erythraeum extends across the upper centre with Argyre at upper centre. Some light features may highlight some of the Valles Marineris complex just right of centre.

This image again seems to indicate that there is some dust across the SPC although I do not know if this is atmospheric or deposited. My feeling is that it may be deposited. Looking at mine, and others recent images, I also have the perception (I could be wrong....) that there may be dust haze across the planet. Possibly some residual from the dust activity we have seen over the last few months?

Dear all,

My first image of the Great Red Spot this year. This was made from a single 1 minute video, the best of three. Some interesting details, including the eeyef shape of the spot, the split in the SEB preceding it, and the incomplete belt N of the SEB (is that classified as part of the SEB?)

Hi all,

I stopped over briefly at Mars on the way out to Jupiter this morning.

There has been some recent discussion regarding possible dust activity on the SPC, and this image set seems to give some credence to this. Ifm not convinced I have made the most out of the RGB- itfs a bit dark.

Dear Jim,

Looking at similar images and the degree of processing necessarily used, the bright belt north of the dark collar is surely a processing artefact, not dust related. You will see the sharpening was enough to bring up the limb artefact.

I have noticed this brighter belt in images over several months, which suggests that it is not a real feature. But I think that if you look at the cap itself you might detect a slight yellow or orange tint, which I think is suspended dust.

Have a look at the image by MacNeill a few days earlier where there is a distinct curved dusty marking near the dark polar rift. Such a feature was seen in 2003.

All good wishes

Richard

Hi Clyde,

Sublimation winds from the SPC continue to be the main event. The dark collar shows the surface that has been blown free of dust and immediately North shows a bright collar of the new dust deposits.

One can estimate that the depth of the evacuated dust layer was less than 3 or 4 meters.

Thanks for your high-res images.

Good seeing,

Hi allA

Valles Marineris at centre right with Solis Lacus at upper right. The familiar "3 leaf clover " structure around Aurorae Sinus can be seen at centre. Nilokeras is visible at lower centre. The SPC looks quite complex at this stage.
