¤••••• Subject: Mars 20 May 0311UT RGB IR SPC and Depressio Parva

Hi all,

I have become quite intrigued over the last week as the dark markings on the SPC have become more evident. Masami Murakami of ISMO/CMO has kindly sent me some background information.

A dark marking in the SPC was apparently first observed by W H Pickering on 22 May 1894, as noted by Percival Lowell in his book of 1895, prompting him to develop a proposal of a polar sea. Two large polar markings were subsequently identified and named by E M Antoniadi which are shown on his map of 1924. From what I can gather, measuring the location, it appears that the main polar dark area seen in my image is Depressio Parva. As always, I am open to comment and correction.

Olympus Mons is at lower left, almost on the terminator, and there is again a slight cloud formation over Arsia Mons at centre left.

It was again nice to get something reasonable out of rather poor seeing conditions, although a pity that the R and IR are negatively affected by the edge artrifact.

Hi all,

I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by this result from this morning, as I thought the conditions were poor, with jet stream. I only used capture one of each channel for the RGB.

Elysium can be seen at lower centre, although the markings are quite subdued. The Gale crater extension(Curiosity Rover) is just right of centre. Large scale structure is seen in the SPC at top.

Image set from this morning in very poor seeing conditions.

Very limited detail visible in the Elysium region at lower left. M Cimmerium is towards upper left with M Tyrrhenum to the right. Hesperia extends between them. The lighter shading of Hellas is on the upper right limb.

By the time I got to IR captures, the seeing had deteriorated even further, ending the session.

Was inspired to re-process one of my best Saturn images sets from 2016 in the past few days. Using improved knowledge and software not available at the time, i was able to get a much more pleasing result. Surprising just how active Saturn was around this time with many features visible in its atmosphere.

Obtained from Barbados under near perfect seeing on June 18th, 2016 when the rings were close to maximum Earthward tilt.

Surprising how much more can be gleaned from past data - software and techniques continually improve. I may do more if and when time permits.

Hi all,

I was fortunate to get some detail out of the rather average seeing conditions of this morning.

Features can be made out in Hellas, best seen in the IR. There is an interesting line of bright streaks running below Hellas, extending from the Ausonia region, across Posidium Pr, Crocea and Oenotria (south of Syrtis Major).

The western edge of Hellas remains quite bright. I measure the bright spot(R) on the edge of the SPC at roughly 334 long and -65 S , which corresponds approximately with the location of Novissima Thyle (Mitchel Mons).

It looks to me as though the right (western) "finger" is Hellespontus itself, while the left (eastern) one is Hellas Depressio. The latter is continuous with Yaonis Fretum along the western edge of Hellas, as you point out. These features have not been evident recently, due to the recent Hellas dust, and they appear to be returning toward normal.

Hi all,

A short session (regrettably) but with some good seeing. The two "fingers", at upper left, that have been quite noticeable recently are well see in the IR and R.

I think the left hand one runs on the inside western edge of Hellas, but I am open to correction. Subtle features can be made out across the Hellespontus, Pandora Fretum and Noachis regions.

Hi all,

Seeing was very poor with Jetstream conditions, so I was pleased that I could at least get something out.

Sinus Sabeaus extends across the centre of the planet with the bright Arabia region below it. Hellas can just be seen at upper left and Syrtis Major is coming into view at left.

　　　I didn't notice until Richard pointed out. When you look at the map of Ebisawa, you can see that there is a thin east-west pattern on the south side of Margaritifer Sinus, which is the same as the old Margaritifer Sinus.

I thought there was a dust veil, but it's not. This part is faint even in the IR image, so I think it is a change in the albedo. Let's trace back to when it started.

Hi Richard,

As always, thanks for your comments. As I only started imaging in 2014, I am only really familiar with developments since then. But, from 2014 through to before the dust storm, I always considered the extension to Margaritifer S to look like a fist with a finger pointing(!), which does not appear to be evident now? (refer attached image from 2016). The best way I guess would be to do maps and compare. If I get a few more rainy days, I’ll see if I can do something . It will also be interesting to see, as resolution gets better, whether there has been significant change from immediately after the 2018 dust storm (as things cleared) until now.

Margaritifer Sinus is now looking more like its old form, is it not, according to these images?

I am thinking that the recent Valles Marineris storm may have influenced the albedo pattern here. What do others think?

Hi all,

A rather rushed dataset from this morning as I was racing against heavy dew, after 4 days of cloud, some good rains and dropping temperatures.

S Meridiani and S Sabeaus are at centre left. The "rearranged" (after the 2018 global dust storm) Margaritifer- Indus region is central. Argyre can just be made out near the edge of the SPC at upper right.
